QPI vs GPA: What's the Difference?

If you’ve transferred between school systems, or you’re just seeing the term “QPI” for the first time, the natural question is: is this different from GPA? The short answer is no — QPI and GPA are computed the same way. The difference is almost entirely one of naming convention. What GPA means
GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It’s the term used by most universities in the United States and many other countries. It’s calculated as a weighted average: each course’s grade is converted to a point value (commonly on a 4.0 scale), multiplied by the course’s units or credit hours, and the results are summed and divided by total units.
What QPI means
QPI stands for Quality Point Index. It’s the preferred term at many universities, particularly across the Philippines, including institutions like Ateneo de Manila University. The formula is identical to GPA:

So why two names for the same thing?
Naming conventions are set by each institution, not by any single global standard. Some schools also use terms like CGPA (Cumulative GPA) or GWA (General Weighted Average, common in Philippine K-12 and some university contexts) — each of these is a variation on the same weighted-average concept, though the underlying grading scale and exact computation can differ slightly by school.
A quick worked example
Suppose you took three courses in a term:

Total quality points: 34.5. Total units: 10. QPI = 34.5 ÷ 10 = 3.45.
