What Does QPI Mean?

QPI stands for Quality Point Index — a single number that summarizes your academic performance by weighting every grade you've earned by the number of units that course was worth.

What is Quality Point Index?

Every course you take is assigned "quality points" based on your grade: an A might be worth 4.0 quality points per unit, a B 3.0, and so on, depending on your school's scale. Multiply your grade's point value by the course's units to get that course's quality points, then sum this across all your courses.

How QPI is calculated

In plain terms: add up the quality points from every course, add up the units from every course, then divide the first total by the second. The result is a weighted average — courses with more units count for more.

QPI vs GPA

QPI and GPA (Grade Point Average) use the exact same underlying calculation. "QPI" is simply the term preferred by many universities — especially across the Philippines — in place of "GPA." If your transcript says QPI, you can treat it exactly like a GPA when comparing academic performance.

Why QPI matters

Your cumulative QPI is often used for academic standing, scholarship eligibility, honors qualification, and admission into certain programs or graduate schools. Because it's cumulative and weighted, it rewards consistent performance across your full course load — not just your best or most recent grades.

How to interpret your QPI

There's no universal "good" QPI — it depends entirely on your school's scale and standards. A term QPI shows how you did in that specific term; a cumulative QPI reflects your entire academic record to date. Always compare your QPI against your own school's official benchmarks (for honors, probation, scholarships, etc.) rather than a generic number you find online.

Example calculation

Total quality points: 28.1. Total units: 8. QPI = 28.1 ÷ 8 = 3.51.
